The Hudson Valley, a region rich in biodiversity, is currently facing a serious environmental concern: habitat fragmentation. Habitat fragmentation occurs when a habitat is broken up into smaller, unconnected areas, typically due to infrastructure development. This process disrupts fragile ecosystems and threatens the survival of numerous species across New York state. 

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), habitat loss is quickly becoming one of the most significant threats to biodiversity in our state. The Hudson Valley alone contains nearly 85% of the bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species found in New York State– habitat fragmentation & biodiversity loss are not just an ecological concern; they also have significant implications for human society.

For residents of New Paltz and surrounding areas, this issue hits close to home as we witness changes in our local environment. By signing this petition, you are advocating for stronger policies on land use planning that prioritize the conservation of our ecosystems over profit.
