Protect Belarusian Freedom Fighters: No Deportation to Dictatorships!

The Issue

Justice for those who risk everything in the name of European values.

Dear United Nations, European Union, and Global Leaders,

We call on you to take immediate action to protect individuals who risk their lives in the fight for democracy and human rights. The recent case of Vasil Verameichyk, a Belarusian democracy fighter and former volunteer of the Kalinoŭski Regiment  , exposes the urgent need for reform in the asylum policies' control.

Despite his dedication to democratic values, Vasil was deemed a "threat to national security" by Lithuanian authorities, resulting in his forced relocation to Asia and subsequent extradition to Belarus. On November 13, he was arrested, and by November 14, he was handed over to a regime known for its oppression, torture, and persecution of political dissidents.

This tragedy highlights systemic failures:

  • Misuse of "national security" arguments to deny protection to democracy fighters.
  • Influence of disinformation, particularly from authoritarian regimes like Russia, shaping policy in democratic states.
  • Insufficient international safeguards to protect those fleeing persecution from being returned to repressive regimes.

These actions contradict international principles of human rights and the values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We demand that:

  • The United Nations investigate and advocate for the release and safety of Vasil Verameichyk and others in similar situations.
  • European Union member states establish transparent and fair asylum procedures to ensure that democracy fighters are protected, not persecuted.
  • Stronger international mechanisms to prevent the deportation of individuals to countries where they face certain harm.
  • Improve resistance to the influence of propaganda and disinformation in decision-making processes in the EU States.

People fighting for freedom and democracy should never be punished for their bravery. They deserve protection, not deportation to authoritarian regimes.
By signing this petition, you are joining a global movement to demand justice for those who risk everything in the name of freedom.

Together, we can ensure that freedom defenders receive the support and recognition they need.

Sign the petition today to stand with Vasil Verameichyk and all those fighting for democracy!
