Protect Beachwood's Wetlands from Proposed Development

Wetlands used to be protected for a reason. Let's keep them that way. Please help this true grass roots petition to protect our wetlands from development.
As a resident of Beachwood, Ohio, I have the privilege of living near one of our community's treasured wetlands. This oasis, nestled between our bustling development and the highway, serves as a sanctuary for diverse bird species and countless other wildlife. It is one of the few remaining places in our town where nature exists undisturbed.
However, this precious wetland is now at grave risk due to a devastating 2023 Supreme Court decision that has stripped federal protections from wetlands across the country. This ruling, which drastically narrows the definition of "waters of the United States," has left many wetlands, including ours, vulnerable to development and destruction. Now, all a developer needs to do is pay for a credit, and they can develop on critical wetlands.
Beyond being a haven for wildlife, our wetlands play a crucial environmental role. They naturally filter our water, enhancing its quality—an indispensable service in a world where access to clean water isn't guaranteed for everyone. Moreover, these wetlands absorb excess rainwater, a feature notably valuable in light of the recent flood warnings our community has experienced. Additionally, they contribute to carbon sequestration, a process key in the fight against climate change. They even aid in reducing the urban heat effect that can exacerbate hot summer days in our town.
There is no benefit to this development - a set of small cluster homes all entering from Fairmount - for the residents of Beachwood. Instead, it directly harms our natural environment and diminishes the quality of life in our town.
Our wetlands are at risk of being lost to development. The irreversible impacts of such a loss—both environmental and personal—must be faced head-on. We, the residents of Beachwood, call upon our local authorities to safeguard our wetlands from this potential threat. Every signature on this petition corroborates the community-wide recognition of our wetlands' importance and our commitment to their preservation.
