The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, property owners, and visitors of Ocean Isle Beach, respectfully urge the Ocean Isle Beach Board of Commissioners to pass a seasonal ordinance that regulates surf fishing from May 1 through September 30 each year.

During the busy summer season, unrestricted surf fishing has led to:

Increased safety concerns for children, swimmers, and beachgoers exposed to dangerous fishhooks, sharp gear, and unattended lines.
Conflicts and overcrowding between anglers and families trying to enjoy the limited beach space.
Environmental and aesthetic issues, including fish remains, bait left on the sand, and unsafe disposal of tackle.
Nearby towns like Sunset Beach have already adopted smart and effective surf fishing regulations to balance recreational fishing with public safety and enjoyment. Ocean Isle Beach should do the same.

We are asking for a simple, seasonal rule that:

Limits surf fishing to early morning and evening hours (e.g., before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.) during the peak season.
Prohibits unattended rods and requires safe disposal of fish waste and bait.
Includes signage and enforcement to ensure compliance.
This ordinance would not ban surf fishing, but it would make the beach safer and more enjoyable for everyone during the times when it is most heavily used.

Please take action now to support public safety, protect our beach, and ensure a positive experience for residents and visitors alike.
