The governments of Canada and British Columbia have finally declared extortion a crisis worthy of a coordinated, funded response. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree says they are working to “restore public confidence in the justice system.” Premier David Eby calls it an “unprecedented threat.”
We say: Recognize the oldest, deepest extortion racket in this land — the colonial theft of Indigenous territory and resources.
The current political spectacle of “fighting extortion” is ironic. This nation was built through systematic, state-sponsored extortion:
· The theft of continents through doctored treaties, broken promises, and the unilateral assertion of Crown title over unceded lands.
· The head tax and exploitative labour used to build railways on stolen land, extracting wealth from Chinese workers while denying them basic rights.
· The Indian Act’s permit system, which extorted Indigenous resources by controlling and stealing timber, minerals, and fish.
· The 60s Scoop and residential schools, which extorted children from their families to strip them of culture, language, and identity.
· The ongoing extraction of billions in resources from unceded territories without consent, while communities face poverty and contamination.
This is the foundational extortion. It has never ended; it just wears new suits.
Now, the Prime Minister and the Premier of Alberta announce that a pipeline will go ahead across territories that are not theirs. They speak of “national interest” as if Canada is a monolithic entity. It is not. British Columbia is a nation of nations. The map is a lie drawn over living titles, laws, and jurisdictions that were never surrendered.
Using federal “national interest” powers to override Indigenous Title and BC’s environmental laws is not new—it is the same colonial extortion, repackaged.
They claim to fight extortion with one hand while wielding its most powerful tool with the other: the threat of state force to take what is not theirs.
Our Petition Is a Direct Challenge to This Legacy.
Our demand is clear: No federal “national interest” designation may override Indigenous Title, Section 35 rights, or BC’s jurisdiction. The “national interest” cannot be defined by Ottawa and Alberta alone while ignoring the constitutionally protected rights of the Nations on whose land the project would trespass.
This is more than a petition. It is a living rallying point.
We will:
· Provide daily updates on court cases, legal challenges, and victories secured by land defenders.
· Advertise and rally support for protests, marches, and direct actions.
· Track and expose every political maneuver attempting to sideline Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).
· Take our call directly to the United Nations and to the King, reminding the Crown of its dishonourable history and current obligations.
The governments are holding summits and task forces on extortion? Good. Let’s put the biggest one on the table: the extortion of land and sovereignty.
SIGN. SHARE. RALLY.
Every signature is a statement: We see the pattern. We reject the colonial playbook. We stand with Indigenous Title and the right of Nations to say NO.
