Protect Bay Area Students from Preventable Sun Damage
The Issue
Every day, elementary school students all over the Bay Area spend their recess and PE outdoors, facing strong UV exposure with little education about proper sun safety. Childhood sun damage can have lasting consequences, such as an increased risk of skin cancer later in life. In many Bay Area cities, UV index values often reach “high” and “very high” levels during the school year, especially in late spring and early fall. California heat waves continue to bring high temperatures all across the Bay Area.
As a Bay Area native, I remember spending long stretches of time outdoors during recess and sports practices without giving much thought to sunscreen or UV exposure. Like many students, I mainly associated sunscreen with activities like going to the beach, not things like recess. After learning how much cumulative sun damage occurs during childhood, I was motivated to push for better awareness and the implementation of simple preventive habits in schools.
Furthermore, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and 1 in 5 Americans develop it during their lifetimes. Research has shown that just a couple of serious sunburns in childhood can drastically increase the risk of melanoma later in life, underscoring the importance of early prevention and the development of good sun protection habits.
We are asking local schools to adopt low-cost, simple sun safety measures to protect our Bay Area students while also teaching them healthy habits.
Our Proposal
-Dedicate 1 minute before recess or outdoor PE for students to apply sunscreen that they have brought from home
-Include brief sun safety-related education during assemblies or lessons
-Encourage hats and staying in the shade during days with high UV forecasts
Why it matters
Schools already instill important habits like handwashing and nutrition. Sun protection deserves the same treatment. These changes cost little to nothing, detract very little instructional time, and help students build healthy lifelong habits while reducing easily preventable sun damage.
