The Issue

Dear Superintendent Anthony Mignella and the Baldwin Union Free School District,

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and community members, are calling on the Baldwin Union Free School District to immediately address serious safety concerns regarding the placement of Universal Pre-K (UPK) students at Baldwin High School @ Shubert.

Families enroll their four-year-old children in UPK with the expectation that they will learn in a safe, nurturing, and age-appropriate environment. Many families no longer feel confident that Shubert School can provide that environment.

On April 28, 2026, law enforcement recovered a firearm brought onto Shubert School grounds by a student. While no one was physically harmed, the incident understandably heightened concerns among parents about campus safety and security measures.

In addition, many families feel there has been a lack of transparency from the district regarding:

  • How UPK students will be protected
  • Whether UPK children will share common spaces with high school students
  • What security measures are currently in place
  • How the district plans to prevent future safety incidents

Shubert School serves students in grades 9–12, including students with behavioral and disciplinary challenges. Parents are deeply concerned about housing four-year-old children in the same facility as significantly older students without clear assurances regarding separation, supervision, and safety protocols.

At this time, families have not been provided with sufficient information regarding:

  • Separate entrances or hallways
  • Bathroom and cafeteria arrangements
  • Outdoor play areas
  • Arrival and dismissal procedures
  • Orientation opportunities or school tours
  • Emergency response and security plans

Our children deserve better. Safety cannot be treated as an afterthought.

We respectfully demand that the Baldwin Union Free School District:

  1. Install enhanced security measures at Shubert School, including metal detectors and trained security personnel.
  2. Guarantee complete separation between UPK students and high school students in all shared spaces.
  3. Relocate the UPK program to a more age-appropriate facility if full separation and safety cannot be guaranteed.

As parents and community members, we are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for basic safety, transparency, and accountability for our youngest learners.

Please sign this petition to support a safe and appropriate learning environment for Baldwin’s UPK students.

Sincerely,

Concerned Baldwin Families and Community Members
