Protect Bahamian Businesses: Stop the Destructive Charter Regulation Changes

The Issue

We, the undersigned, urge the Bahamian government to reconsider the proposed charter regulation changes requiring all foreign-owned vessels to exclusively use Bahamian brokers and clearinghouses—while still imposing the existing 14% VAT.

These changes don’t just burden foreign yacht operators—they risk cutting off real economic opportunity for Bahamians.

Let us be clear:
We are not here to take jobs from Bahamians. We are here because we love this country and want to create more jobs by running legal, ethical charters that fuel the local economy—from the capital to the most remote out islands.

For years, The Bahamas has been one of the world’s most sought-after charter destinations. Charter vessels—often owned and operated by people who have genuinely fallen in love with these waters—bring a continuous stream of business to Bahamian communities. From provisioners and dockhands to chefs, drivers, housekeepers, marina staff, maintenance crews, and more—every visiting charter directly supports local livelihoods.

But that balance is in jeopardy.

Since the 14% VAT was introduced, we’ve already seen a steep decline in vessels choosing The Bahamas. Many have pivoted to charter-friendly markets like the BVIs, French Polynesia, and Mexico. Now, the proposal to limit access to only Bahamian brokers—without expanding the pool of qualified professionals—will push even more yachts away.

This doesn’t just reduce vessel traffic. It cuts The Bahamas off from the global charter market—shutting out international brokers and clearinghouses who drive bookings, bring in high-net-worth clients, and generate repeat business for Bahamian partners. A handful of local brokers simply can’t absorb that volume—and many yachts will just stop coming altogether.

Charter vessels...
They hire Bahamians.
They buy local.
They pay for marinas, fuel, laundry, tours, and restaurants. They bring paying customers and clients to outer islands resturants and shops. They keep the economic engine running in dozens of smaller islands where opportunity is limited—and where it matters most.

We’re not asking for a tax exemption. We believe in fair taxation that uplifts Bahamian communities and builds local infrastructure. But policies that restrict business, limit partnerships, and push out compliant operators will do the opposite: shrink the pie for everyone.

This isn’t just about foreign boats. It’s about protecting Bahamian jobs, preserving the economic vitality of the out islands, and keeping The Bahamas at the forefront of the global luxury charter industry.

Let’s build a stronger charter system—together.
One that’s fair, inclusive, and deeply rooted in supporting Bahamian prosperity.

Sign this petition to urge the government to rethink these damaging regulations and keep The Bahamas open for responsible, job-creating charters.
