The Issue

Anderson’s East Street area is a mixed neighborhood where homes, families, local businesses, and community spaces exist side by side. Residents are concerned about the proposal to establish a crematory and funeral home and/or chapel at 2846 East Street and whether these uses are appropriate for this location.

Our concerns extend beyond the crematory itself. A funeral home or chapel could bring increased vehicle traffic, parking demands, funeral processions, deliveries, and additional commercial activity into an area where people live directly adjacent to and across from the proposed site. Residents deserve to understand how these impacts could affect the surrounding neighborhood before such a use is approved.

The proposed crematory raises additional concerns regarding air quality, emissions, environmental impacts, and the proximity of cremation operations to nearby homes and businesses. These concerns deserve careful review, clear answers, and meaningful public consideration before any approval is granted.

This is not about whether funeral homes, chapels, or crematories have a place in a community. It is about whether this particular location is appropriate for these uses. Residents should have a meaningful voice in a decision that could permanently affect the character, safety, and quality of life of their neighborhood.

We are asking the City of Anderson to not approve the proposed crematory and funeral home and/or chapel at 2846 East Street and to consider locations better suited for these uses.

By signing this petition, you are standing with East Street residents and asking that their concerns about neighborhood compatibility, traffic, parking, air quality, environmental impacts, and quality of life be heard and taken seriously.
