As part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund clean-up of the Gowanus Canal, the EPA has reached an agreement with the City of NY to site an 8M gallon sewage holding tank along Nevins Street and the Canal between Douglass and Degraw streets, across from Thomas Greene Playground, SkatePark and Double D Pool in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
There is now an open comment period, ending June 16, 2017, to the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in regards to the environmental impacts as a result of the tank siting.
PLEASE SIGN OUR UPDATED PETITION BEFORE June 16, 2017 to
EPA Region 2 Superfund Director, Walter Mugdan, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and Vincent Sapienza, Acting Commissioner Department of Environmental Protection, NYC. asking that all agencies involved in the Superfund remediation efforts impacting Thomas Greene Park guarantee continuity of the Park's amenities and services and use the remediation opportunity to increase park space in this already critically underserved area. Please urge EPA and the City of NY to include clear requirements for a temporary park and park reconstruction, consider environmental justice and strive to raise and not diminish the quality of life for residents in the area and to hold the responsible polluters accountable to provide for and grow Thomas Greene Park during the Gowanus Canal Superfund clean-up in Brooklyn, NY.
