The Issue

The Sierra Madre, often called the spine of Luzon in the Philippines, is facing an environmental crisis predominantly due to the relentless and unregulated mining activities that are, day by day, deteriorating this magnificent ecosystem.

Statistics reveal that the Sierra Madre, which stretches over 500 kilometers, is not only home to countless species of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic and endangered, but it also acts as a natural barrier protecting communities from typhoons coming from the Pacific Ocean. Yet, despite this crucial role in safeguarding lives and biodiversity, the mountains are being compromised by continuing mining practices that threaten to permanently alter the landscape and destroy it beyond repair.

Our country is blessed with incredible natural beauty that should be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Unfortunately, very little attention is being given to Sierra Madre, leaving its plight overlooked in national conversations about environmental protection. This continuous exploitation is a ticking time bomb that not only endangers the flora and fauna of the region but also the people whose lives are intimately connected to these lands.

Concrete steps need to be taken to address these mining activities. Firstly, stricter enforcement of current environmental laws needs to occur. Secondly, there must be an immediate halt to any new mining permits until thorough assessments are made. Additionally, implementing sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives can ensure that local economies continue to thrive without compromising our precious natural resources.

Join me in calling for urgent action to protect and conserve the Sierra Madre. Let's ensure it regains its rightful place in national priorities and policies. Your signature can make a difference in persuading lawmakers to adopt stricter regulations and protect what is left of this national treasure. Sign now to advocate for the life and future of Sierra Madre. Together, we can make our voices heard.
