I am deeply passionate about the health of our planet, particularly the state of our coral reefs. These vibrant underwater ecosystems are essential to marine life, supporting an estimated 25% of all marine species. Yet, they are under severe threat due to climate change.

Coral reefs serve as a critical source of food and income for millions globally. They also act as natural barriers that protect coastal cities from storms and erosion. However, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we have already lost half of the world's coral reefs in the last three decades.

In Illinois, we may be thousands of miles away from these underwater ecosystems but their loss affects us all. The decline in coral reefs contributes significantly to global warming which impacts every corner of our world including Illinois with increased heatwaves and flooding.

We must take immediate action to conserve these precious ecosystems by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable fishing practices among other measures.
