The Issue

Wild horses and burros are living symbols of America’s heritage, protected under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Yet today, tens of thousands have been removed from public lands and placed into long-term holding, while concerns continue to grow about cost, sustainability, and humane treatment.

At the same time, American horses remain at risk of entering slaughter pipelines through export loopholes.

The Safeguard American Food Exports Act (SAFE Act) would permanently ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and prohibit their export for that purpose.

We, the undersigned, call on our elected officials to:

Support and pass the SAFE Act
Reduce reliance on large-scale wild horse roundups
Prioritize humane, on-range management solutions such as fertility control
Explore responsible rewilding options for horses currently in holding facilities
Increase transparency and accountability in federal wild horse programs

Wild horses should be managed—but they should also remain wild.

As taxpayers and citizens, we believe there are more humane, sustainable solutions that protect both these animals and the land they inhabit.
