Protect America's Arctic from Oil and Gas Drilling

The Issue

The bowhead whale is an iconic Arctic species that follows the movement of melting and freezing sea ice to feed and raise their young in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. These shallow and productive waters also provide a wealth of nutrients feeding birds, fish, seals, walruses and beluga whales.

But the future health of America's Arctic is at risk from offshore oil and gas leasing.

The Obama Administration has proposed offshore oil and gas development within several areas in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas.

The impacts of developing these reserves could be irreversible. Because of increased shipping and ocean noise pollution, and the threat from oil spills, the impact on species like bowhead whales and walruses could be devastating.
