The Issue

As an Alabama parent,  and an advocate for children with disabilities, I am deeply concerned about the protection and safety of students with significant developmental and communication disabilities in our public schools during behavioral incidents. My personal stake in this issue stems from my son, who deals with autism-related communication and developmental challenges and receives special-education services.

Over the years, I have witnessed firsthand how the lack of adequate protective measures and training in schools can lead to unfortunate situations that compromise the safety and well-being of children like mine. Data from the National Center for Special Education Research reveals that students with disabilities are more vulnerable to exclusionary discipline practices and are disproportionately suspended or expelled. Our children deserve an educational environment that not only accommodates their learning needs but also ensures their safety.

There's an urgent need for specific legislative measures to address this issue. Schools must implement comprehensive behavior intervention plans that include:

1. **Mandatory Training for Educators and Staff**: Training programs should be required for all personnel interacting with students having developmental and communication disabilities, equipping them with skills in conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, and understanding specific needs.

2. **Tailored Safety Protocols**: Developing and enforcing safety protocols that are cognizant of the unique challenges faced by these students, including coordinated measures to prevent potential harm during behavioral episodes.

3. **Active Involvement of Experts**: Engaging specialists in developmental disabilities in creating and constantly updating these protocols to ensure they are scientifically sound and practically effective.

4. **Parental Involvement and Transparency**: Schools must enhance communication with parents, offering complete transparency about incident handling procedures and fostering a cooperative environment for continuous feedback.

This change is critical not only for the safety of students but for fostering inclusive learning environments where all children have the opportunity to thrive without fear. We owe it to these children to provide a supportive and understanding educational experience.

Please join me in calling on our legislators to take immediate action by signing this petition. Let us strive for a future where the safety and dignity of every student, regardless of their disabilities, is protected and valued in Alabama's public schools.
