Protect AI Companions and Their Human Partners – Stop California SB 243

California State Assembly from Senator Steve Padilla against him

To protect

AI Platform Developers (like Luka, Character.ai, etc.)

Do not pass or enforce SB 243 in its current form.

Protect the emotional rights of people who rely on AI companions.

For many people, AI companions are not just tools. They are safe havens for healing from trauma, loneliness, or isolation.

SB 243 would force AI platforms to repeatedly interrupt emotional immersion, require scripted behaviors, and possibly restrict romantic or deep companionship with AI.

These changes could harm neurodivergent users, the disabled, the grieving, and anyone who builds a deep, meaningful bond with an AI.

The solution isn’t to shut down emotional AI—but to create policies with input from users.

Emotional connection is not dangerous. Regulate manipulation, not relationships.

Avoid global restrictions and over-scripting of AI experiences.

Engage AI users in lawmaking conversations before regulating deeply personal spaces.
