Protect Access to mRNA COVID Vaccines in Florida

Protect Access to mRNA COVID Vaccines in Florida
The Issue
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo has crossed a dangerous line. In a recent interview, he stated that the “goal” is for mRNA COVID-19 vaccines “not to be available to anyone” in Florida—despite clear evidence that these vaccines have saved millions of lives around the world.
This is not just a personal opinion. Ladapo leads the Florida Department of Health. His statements and policies influence how public health resources are distributed—and who can access lifesaving care. Already, confusion is growing across Florida: some pharmacies are refusing to stock updated COVID vaccines or are requiring prescriptions just to obtain them. That’s not choice. That’s obstruction.
The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were rigorously tested, authorized by the FDA, and backed by major medical institutions around the world. While no medical intervention is without risks, overwhelming evidence shows these vaccines reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death—especially in high-risk groups.
But Ladapo has repeatedly used his position to spread doubt, even after reports showed his department cherry-picked data to justify discouraging vaccination in young men. Now, he’s suggesting that access to these vaccines should be cut off entirely for all Floridians.
This is unacceptable.
We, the undersigned, call on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, state lawmakers, and national pharmacy chains to publicly reject Ladapo’s anti-vaccine rhetoric—and to guarantee that Floridians will continue to have access to FDA-approved mRNA COVID-19 vaccines without unnecessary barriers.
In a state where over 7 million people are over age 50, restricting access to COVID vaccines doesn’t protect freedom—it endangers lives.
Governor DeSantis appointed Ladapo. He can and must ensure that public health guidance in Florida is based on science, not ideology. Florida residents deserve access to the same tools to protect themselves and their families as anyone else in America.
Don’t let politics interfere with medicine. Demand full, equal access to mRNA vaccines in Florida.
