Protect academic integrity and critical thinking in Florida classrooms

Protect academic integrity and critical thinking in Florida classrooms
The Issue
Florida students deserve a public education grounded in facts, not filtered through political agendas. But the Florida State Board of Education is considering new social studies standards that would revive Cold War–style anti-communist rhetoric and inject a deeply skewed ideological viewpoint into classrooms across the state.
These proposed standards don’t just teach the history of communism—they go far beyond it. They reframe Senator Joseph McCarthy’s blacklisting and censorship campaigns as misunderstood, downplay the constitutional dangers of the Red Scare, and accuse the media and universities of being pro-communist threats to American values. This isn’t education. It’s government propaganda.
Our schools should teach students how to think, not what to think. By pushing one-sided narratives that blur the line between civic education and political indoctrination, the state is actively undermining students’ ability to engage critically with history and civic life. These standards don’t empower young people to form independent opinions—they’re designed to steer them toward one.
Floridians across the political spectrum have reason to be alarmed. Whether you're a parent, a teacher, a student, or simply a voter who values freedom of thought, this is a moment to speak up. If we allow any government—regardless of party—to dictate history to fit its own ideology, we risk losing the very liberties we claim to teach.
We urge the Florida State Board of Education to reject these biased standards and uphold the integrity of public education. Let’s keep our classrooms free from political agendas—left, right, or otherwise—and ensure students are taught with accuracy, balance, and respect for intellectual freedom.
Sign this petition to tell Florida’s education leaders: stop using our schools to score political points. Let students think for themselves.
