Labrador Retriever Gus’ home was invaded on May 1, 2019, while his guardians were not home. Gus, his canine sister Juliette, and their 5 cat siblings were nowhere to be found when their guardians arrived home. Gus and Juliette had escaped (Juliette was found safe the next day), and the cats were hiding. Several areas in the home were covered in blood, and an axe was lying on the floor.
Gus eventually came out of hiding from behind a bush in the family’s back yard. He had been hit and beaten with an axe and had extensive injuries to his head and body, including a fractured skull. Gus was rushed to the vet but could not be saved.
23-year-old Wyatt Sturgeon has been charged with breaking and entering, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a weapon (an axe) to commit an offence, and wilfully causing unnecessary pain to an animal.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Crown Attorney proceed with the animal cruelty charge against the accused as an indictable offence and, IF he is convicted, advocate for the maximum sentence possible, including a ban from owning, having the custody or control of, or residing in the same premises as an animal or a bird for the rest of his life.
We make this request recognizing that animals are sentient and vulnerable beings who rely upon the courts to ensure sentences reflect appropriate deterrence and denunciation of people who are convicted of harming them (and people who would consider harming them). Further, it has been well-demonstrated in research that people who harm animals have the potential to also harm humans, so our communities will be safer if the courts take animal cruelty seriously and impose meaningful sentences in such cases.
