A woman in Wind Gap, Pennsylvania allegedly turned ordinary mushrooms into weapons, packing them with broken razor blade pieces and throwing them over a six-foot fence into her neighbor's yard. That yard is where her neighbor's three-year-old Doberman spends its time. Security footage caught the whole thing on camera, and police confirm the mushrooms were laced with razors capable of causing serious internal injury to any animal that ate them.

Lisa Denardo now faces charges of animal cruelty and possessing instruments of crime with intent to use them criminally, according to police. But a charge is only the first step. Prosecutors need to pursue this case to the fullest extent the law allows, and Pennsylvania lawmakers need to make sure cases like this one, deliberately weaponizing food to injure someone else's pet, carry penalties that actually match the danger involved.

This wasn't a moment of carelessness. Police say the mushrooms were "specially made or specially adapted" for criminal use. That's premeditation, aimed at a family's dog, in their own backyard. If neighbors can legally get away with rigging traps meant to maim or kill a pet next door, no family's yard is truly safe.

The Doberman in this case wasn't hurt only because its owner happened to check the yard in time. The next animal, or the next family, might not be so lucky.
