The Issue

A horrifying act of cruelty recently took place in Charlotte. A video posted on social media shows a live opossum being drenched in flammable liquid and set on fire while still alive. The video, filmed and shared by the abusers themselves, has sparked outrage across our community and we want full accountability for their actions with the maximum felony charges and sentencing allowed under the law.

Animal cruelty like this is not just inhumane. It is a danger to public safety. Research, including studies cited by the FBI, shows a strong link between violence toward animals and future violence against people. These crimes cannot be ignored or minimized.

Charlotte must stand against cruelty. Our community deserves better than to allow such brutality without consequences.

Under North Carolina law and federal protections like the PACT Act, this act qualifies for felony prosecution. We are calling on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and federal authorities to pursue the strongest possible felony charges and sentencing against those responsible.

This is not just about protecting animals. It is about protecting our community from those willing to commit acts of senseless violence.

Sign this petition to demand full prosecution and show that Charlotte will not tolerate cruelty.
