Prosecute Florida Sea Turtle Poachers and Toughen Penalties for Selling Turtles
The Issue
Five protected sea turtles, including two hatchlings, were allegedly captured and sold off Florida's Gulf Coast as part of an illegal fishing operation. Now ten people face charges, and the outcome of this case will show whether Florida's wildlife laws carry real weight.
After reports that reef fish were being illegally taken from the Gulf, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) launched an undercover investigation in May 2022. Four years later, investigators allege the group harvested roughly 23,000 pounds of fish and earned more than $150,000 selling fish, shrimp, and sea turtles. Authorities say the sales took place at night, out of private homes, and on the water to dodge reporting rules. Three of the defendants are accused of selling three adult turtles and two hatchlings directly to undercover officers.
Sea turtles are protected by both Florida and federal law. Capturing, keeping, or selling them is illegal. Yet this case shows how long an alleged poaching operation can run before charges are filed.
The Florida Attorney General's Office should pursue every charge in this case, including racketeering, to the fullest extent of the law. A weak outcome would tell poachers the risk is worth the reward.
The Florida Legislature should act too. Lawmakers can raise penalties for possessing or selling marine turtles, especially hatchlings, and give FWC the resources it needs to catch poaching rings faster. Honest Gulf fishermen who follow the rules deserve nothing less.
Sign the petition to demand full accountability for sea turtle poachers before more of these animals vanish from Florida's waters.
