The Issue

A small, injured dog in Eugene needed care. Instead, according to court documents reported by the Eugene Register-Guard, a 68-year-old man is accused of trying to drown the dog in a toilet this July and then throwing its body into a dumpster outside an apartment complex in the city. He now faces a charge of first-degree animal abuse, with an arraignment set for Oct. 29 in Lane County Circuit Court.

The Lane County District Attorney's Office has the power to make sure this case gets the serious attention it deserves. People across Lane County are calling on the District Attorney to pursue the charge fully and fairly and, if the court finds him guilty, to seek the strongest penalty Oregon law allows.

Animals can't speak up in a courtroom or call for help. They depend on neighbors to notice cruelty and on prosecutors to treat it as the crime it is. When a case like this is handled with care, it sends a clear message to the whole community: hurting a helpless animal has real consequences.

This case is still in its early stages, and everyone accused of a crime has the right to a fair process. That is exactly why public attention matters now. It shows that Lane County residents are watching and expect this case to be taken seriously from start to finish.

Sign the petition to urge the Lane County District Attorney to pursue full justice for this dog as the case heads to court on Oct. 29.
