On April 1, 2026, my world was shattered when my husband, Phil Balli, a dedicated cyclist and the love of my life, was killed by a driver while he was legally riding his bicycle on the street with an organized ride. The pain of losing him is indescribable and the possibility that the driver responsible may not be prosecuted compounds the heartache.

Unfortunately, our tragedy is not an isolated incident with another beloved local bicyclist losing his life last Thursday, April 16th, near Sam Rayburn Highway and Alma. Every year, thousands of cyclists are injured or killed by negligent drivers who face little to no legal consequences. In the United States alone in 2023, there were over 1,100 pedal cyclist fatalities according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Many of these tragic deaths occur because drivers are not held accountable for their actions.
