For at least three weeks, according to police, no one saw Brandi Leann Tyrrell at JoJo's LaundroMutt, the Dothan, Alabama grooming business she ran. The shop had gone without working utilities since June. When Dothan Animal Services finally responded to complaints about the smell coming from inside, they found cats that had died in their cages and other animals still trapped there, weak and neglected after what investigators believe was roughly a month with no food, water, or care.

Tyrrell now faces two felony counts of first-degree cruelty to a cat and six additional animal cruelty charges. That is a start, but it isn't enough. Animals should never be left to suffer and die simply because the person responsible for them walked away. The Houston County District Attorney's Office should pursue the maximum penalties the law allows, so this case sends a real deterrent, not just a headline.

Just as important, this shouldn't have taken a month and a foul smell to uncover. The Dothan City Council should require regular welfare inspections for any business that boards, houses, or cares for animals, with a clear, fast process for investigating complaints the moment they come in, not weeks later.
