Forty-two West Highland White Terriers were found crammed into a utility trailer in Marysville, Washington — some as young as four weeks old, others as old as four years. Officers who opened the trailer on August 31 discovered dogs living among stacked kennels and makeshift partitions, many matted, soaked in their own waste, and showing signs of medical distress. Puppies were kept in a plastic storage tub. Not one of the 42 dogs had been spayed or neutered, a clear sign this was an unchecked breeding operation, not a case of someone simply falling behind on pet care.

Marysville police have already done the hard part: they recommended 42 counts of second-degree animal cruelty, one for every dog pulled from that trailer. Now it's up to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney's Office to decide how far this case goes. A reduced plea or a handful of dropped counts would send the message that mass neglect on this scale is cheap to walk away from.

These dogs are already getting a second chance — shelter staff have vaccinated them, microchipped them, and moved them into clean enclosures while they wait for medical evaluations and, eventually, adoptive homes. The people responsible for their suffering deserve to face consequences that match the scale of what was done to them: all 42 counts, not a fraction of them.
