Proposed Alligator Gar Regulations in Texas

The Issue

A proposal to regulate the taking of Alligator Gar in Texas is making it's way through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division (TWPD) commission.  This proposal would:  impose size limits on Alligator Gar that can be harvested in sections of the Trinity River, possibly prevent bowfishing at night for Alligator Gar, and require mandatory reporting for Alligator Gar that are harvested statewide.  All of these regulations have no scientific evidence to support them, but are seen as a way to protect the larger fish.

We maintain that any decisions regarding restrictive regulations should be based on sound scientific evidence. In fact, biologists for the state have admitted that the population is sustainable based on work they have done on the subject. A trip to Texas to seek out a trophy Alligator Gar is a desire for many in the bowfishing community. These fish make excellent table fare as well, so they are not wasted when they are harvested.

Signing this petition shows that you want to protect the opportunity to take a trophy Alligator Gar with a bow in Texas and that any regulations limiting that opportunity should be based on sound scientific evidence with the full support of the state biologists, and not on the perceived impact that bowfishers are having on the resource.
