Proposal to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary in Dallas, TX for Teacher Mae Frances Wesley

The Issue

If our beloved school.... Robert E. Lee Elementary... is to be renamed... and it seems likely it will be... I'd like to propose we name it for a teacher dear to many... many alumni... one who taught us by example the sort of colorblind love that so many in this country seem to have never learned... I won't ever feel good about the ignorance and divisiveness surrounding the events that have lead us to this point... but I would sleep well knowing that Mae Frances Wesley Elementary School stands at the corner of Delmar and Goodwin as a testament to what we are capable of when we see ourselves as one human family, with one heritage, and one future.

Biographical Information ---

Mae Frances Wesley was born and raised in Marshall, TX. She moved to Dallas at the age of nineteen to attend Bishop College where she earned a Bachelor Degree in Education. She later went on to earn a Masters Degree from East Texas State University. She began her teaching career at John Henry Brown Elementary in Dallas when DISD schools were still mostly segregated. Four years later when court ordered desegregation began she was transferred to Casa View Elementary. A year after that she moved to Robert E. Lee Elementary where she taught for twenty five years before retiring from the DISD.
