The Issue

This petition aims to honor one of NYCHA's outstanding contributions to empowerment: George "Grand Master DJ Scratch" Spivey.

An entrepreneur, radio host, executive music producer, and more, his hometown wants to recognize him as one of the iconic figures in the world of music and Hip Hop—through the establishment of an annual community block party and a proposed Adopt-A-Park or Adopt-A-Bench initiative in Crown Heights, NYCHA Albany Houses.

As a trailblazer in Hip-Hop, DJ Scratch honed his craft and launched his illustrious career at Albany Houses (also known as "Albany Projects"), eventually making his mark creating platforms like WSVR and Scratchvision.com.  His influence has spanned generations; and continue to resonate both locally and around the world.

We propose that an annual segment of Albany Avenue, from Bergen Street to Park Place, be dedicated to recognizing DJ Scratch’s remarkable journey and impact with a block party.  This is where he spent his formative years; cultivating his talent and creativity, built life-long bonds, and where he remains a beacon of inspiration for aspiring artists and the broader community.

In recognition of his contributions, Brooklyn honors DJ Scratch Day every year on August 14—a testament to his enduring influence and role in shaping the cultural landscape of NYC city.  His 'hood would like to commemorate his legacy in a similar manner--and make this a tribute made to the multiple generations within our NYCHA communities and abroad.

Through this initiative, we seek not only to preserve his legacy, but also to set precedence to honor the legacy of other past and present NYCHA Hometown Heroes.

These honors will inspire future generations by commemorating his (and other) achievements in the very place where it all began.  An annual block party would also serve as a cultural celebration of DJ Scratch's (and other's) genius; bringing together local politicians, residents, and visitors to honor his role in the evolution of Hip Hop music.

Additionally, the adoption of the NYCHA Albany Houses' Little Park or a bench; located just outside of the bedroom windows where he grew up playing in, will serve as a permanent tribute to his legacy.  This act of kindness and generosity will help to foster community pride, and create a green space that symbolizes unity and artistic innovation.

This tribute goes beyond a simple gesture—it’s a heartfelt acknowledgment of gratitude, respect, and appreciation for the NYCHA neighborhood legends who shaped our communities' identities, and enriched the cultural heritage of the arts and entertainment world.

We respectfully request your support in this initial endeavor to celebrate and preserve the legacy of one of NYCHA's own; George "Grand Master DJ Scratch" Spivey.

Please sign this petition to help establish the first annual “Grand Master DJ Scratch” Block Party and Dedication of NYCHA Public Space, ensuring the ongoing recognition of our chosen NYCHA legacies, and securing a place in the history of our Brooklyn housing community.

Thank you,
