Promoting Healthy Technology Use and Combating Digital Addiction

The Issue

Somewhere, somebody is probably shaking their head wondering when on earth will this madness stop? Our current generation has taken flight in an era swamped with technology, which has taken a heavy toll on their mental and physical health.

The rising prevalence of digital over-dependence among the youth is worrying. According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by July 2021 through December 2023, more than half of the adolescents aged 12–17 used screens for 4 or more hours a day. Moreover, constant connectivity also leads to growing anxiety and depression in the youth segment. This overuse of displays negatively affects socialization and mental health, impedes educational performance, and causes problems in the physical world: eye strain and sleep problems, for example.

Given that we live in a tech world, it is crucial that we encourage responsible online activity. Educational institutions and technology firms have a vital place in building the digital ecosystem.

And that is why I call for strong policies that prioritize digital well-being. In schools, this can happen through thorough digital literacy education that reinforces responsible tech use. Tech companies have huge bandwagon appeal to this cause, and can push for well-placed health settings, such as screen time management tools, by app usage dashboards, focus modes, etc.

We the young, the aged, the internet-savvy people should not be subject to gadget-dependent lives. We need to rethink our digital lifestyle. So, stand with me, let's share and let the world know. Let's promote healthier digital habits and tackle digital addiction head-on. We can put an end to it. Sign this petition today!
