Promote road safety measures in Bangladesh

The Issue

A loved one left home for work and never returned. A poorly managed road, speeding vehicles, and lack of enforcement turned an ordinary journey into a fatal one. This is not an isolated incident — it happens every day in Bangladesh. We must act now to prevent more families from suffering the same irreversible loss.

Every year, thousands of lives are lost on the roads of Bangladesh. According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, there were over 4,580 reported road accidents in 2020 alone, resulting in 6,686 fatalities. This is a national crisis that demands immediate attention and action from the authorities.

The lack of proper infrastructure, poor road conditions, and inadequate traffic enforcement exacerbate the risk of fatal accidents. Many roads lack basic safety features such as pedestrian crossings, adequate lighting, and clear signage, making them treacherous for everyone—children, elderly, and daily commuters alike.

We call upon the Government of Bangladesh to prioritize road safety by implementing a comprehensive programme that includes:

1. Upgrading and maintaining infrastructure to ensure roads are safe for all users.
2. Installing traffic calming measures and pedestrian crossings in high-risk areas.
3. Enforcing strict penalties for traffic violations and speeding.
4. Increasing the number of traffic police to monitor and control road safety more effectively.
5. Launching nationwide road safety awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of reckless driving.

Let's make our roads safer for everyone. It is time for us to take responsibility and ensure that no more lives are lost due to preventable traffic accidents. Please sign this petition to urge the Government of Bangladesh to act now and bring about meaningful change to our road safety standards. Together, we can save lives.
