Promote Gender Equality in the Philippines and Netherlands
Promote Gender Equality in the Philippines and Netherlands
The Issue
In both the Philippines and the Netherlands, gender inequality persists in various forms. Women often earn less than men for performing the same work, lack access to safe and legal reproductive healthcare, are underrepresented in leadership roles and government positions, and face high rates of gender-based violence.
In terms of equal pay, women in the Netherlands earn approximately 14% less than men (Eurostat), while Filipino women earn about 10% less (Philippine Statistics Authority). This wage gap is not only unfair but also hinders economic growth.
Reproductive rights are another area where improvements can be made. Despite advances in recent years, many women still lack access to safe abortion services or contraception methods due to restrictive laws or societal stigma.
Political representation is also an issue. According to Inter-Parliamentary Union data, as of 2020 only 48% of seats in the Dutch Parliament were held by women; this figure was even lower at just over 30% for the Philippines.
Finally, we must address gender-based violence. The World Health Organization reports that approximately one-third of women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner at some point in their lives - a statistic that holds true for both countries mentioned here.
We call on policymakers and leaders within these nations to take decisive action towards promoting gender equality across all sectors. By doing so they will not only improve individual lives but also contribute positively towards societal progress as a whole. Please sign this petition if you believe everyone deserves equal rights regardless of their gender.
