Promote Climate Action Solutions that are within our reach
The Issue
Recognizing the immediate and urgent need for action, We the undersigned hereby petition international agencies, federal and local governments to immediately institute laws, rulings and decrees to limit further rises in global temperature. Including, but not limited to, the following:
Massive reforestation- in the order of a trillion of trees planted over a 5 yr period. Mechanized (and aerial) planting has advanced to the point where it is possible to plant far more than 1,000,000 trees a day. These can be planted on government lands and previously deforested areas. https://blog.tentree.com/aerial-tree-bombers-can-plant-a-forest-of-1-million-trees-per-day/
Mandate and incentivize the use of rock dust fertilizers on public and agricultural land to capture atmospheric carbon. Igneous rocks are available on every continent for such a purpose. This is capable of removing in excess of 50% of the present day annual carbon emissions https://e360.yale.edu/features/how-adding-rock-dust-to-soil-can-help-get-carbon-into-the-ground
Incentivize and promote the rapid development and commercial adaptation of Deep Geothermal (5-20km deep) energy and direct a large initial portion of the energy produced to Carbon capture and storage. This alone has the capacity to draw down atmospheric carbon concentration by many percent a year.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzHmwggbL8o
Re-commission (or build new) nuclear reactors as quickly (and safely) as possible and direct the energy output entirely to carbon capture and storage. This alone has the capacity to draw down atmospheric carbon concentration by many percent a year. We recognize that there are risks associated with this approach- ideally its use can be tapered off as the atmosphere is restored to safe levels of carbon.
Mandate serious energy efficiency programs in order to reduce energy waste associated with carbon emission in the medium term- examples:1) new cars must have white interiors to lessen the AC load required. 2) All indicator LEDS must be less than 2 mA. 3) Give employers incentives to allow distant employees to work remotely. 4) Urban planning must adopt measures to reduce energy consumption- e.g. fly ash in asphalt to reflect heat and therefore reduce energy use from AC.
Accelerate the large-scale development of carbon air capture technologies and fund existing initiatives with wartime urgency.
Mandate point of use carbon capture (into law) as this is more energetically efficient than direct air capture and prevents a further rise in atmospheric carbon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeYJTluQ5tM
Immediately begin an international program of cloud brightening and other benign cooling technologies to lower the planets temperature and forestall the worst effects of sea level rise.
Bring the financial heft and political will of the insurance industry into the fight. Allow them to provide consumers and governments with carrot and stick consequences to encourage climate initiatives. This industry has no future if climate risks continue to accelerate. They are already in trouble. https://www.forbes.com/sites/dianebrady/2023/06/14/who-wants-to-insure-california-and-florida-or-the-rest/?sh=3a8b5471531c
Direct settlements from civil cases against oil and gas companies for environmental damage towards carbon capture and storage and emission reduction initiatives and research.
