Growing up, I have always felt a deep sense of pride in being an Indian citizen. My family instilled in me the values of respect, responsibility, and empathy, which shaped my understanding of what it truly means to be part of a vibrant and diverse nation. However, as I navigated the complexities of adult life, I realized that many of us focus more on our rights as citizens while overlooking the equally important fundamental duties enshrined in our Constitution.

India, the world's largest democracy, thrives on the participation and commitment of each citizen. Our Constitution not only guarantees fundamental rights but also outlines a set of fundamental duties that every Indian should follow. These duties, included in Article 51A, emphasize the spirit of tolerance, scientific temper, and the responsibility to protect public property, among others. But, unfortunately, a significant portion of the population remains unaware or indifferent to these responsibilities.

Studies and surveys suggest that public awareness of these fundamental duties is alarmingly low. Despite being present in textbooks, there is a lack of emphasis in curricula and everyday discourse. According to a report by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, almost 60% of students in higher education are unaware of their fundamental duties. This statistic is a stark reminder of the gap between knowledge and implementation.

We believe in the potential for change. To bridge this gap, we propose the following measures:

1. **Incorporate comprehensive modules in school and university curricula** that highlight the importance and relevance of fundamental duties.

2. **Government and private media campaigns** that creatively engage and inform citizens about their duties alongside their rights.

3. **Regular workshops and seminars led by community leaders and educators** to encourage grassroots understanding and practice of these duties.

By taking these steps, we not only educate but empower citizens to contribute positively to national development.

Everyone has the right to demand good governance and access their rights, but simultaneously, it is critical to recognize that duties performed by citizens are equally vital for a harmonized society. It’s time we reinvigorate the dialogue and action around our shared responsibilities as citizens of India.
