Civil Rights Leaders Call for Drop of Assault Charges Against Maywood Teacher
Charges Send Dangerous Message of Teacher Vulnerability
Project Islamic President Najee Ali and Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson and other civil rights leaders on Monday, November 5 for LA County DA Jackie Lacey to drop charges against Maywood Academy High music teacher Marston Riley is charged with assault in the fight with a HS student that verbally and physically assailed him.
“The full video of the altercation show that Riley was subjected to racial slurs and a physical attack by the student,” says Ali and Hutchinson, “The teacher’s actions were self-defense and while the school policy forbids the use of force against students this policy does not mean a teacher must be subjected to a physical assault without defense. Riley’s arrest sends the dangerous message that students can abuse teachers with no fear of consequences.”
