Prohibit the Use of Harmful Chemicals in Sunscreens

The Issue

The reefs have always held a special place in my heart. Their beauty isn't just pleasing to the eye; it goes much further than that. Reefs provide an ecosystem for a diverse range of aquatic life, regulate carbon dioxide which is essential for marine life, and also contribute to food sources and income through avenues like fishing and tourism.

However, our beloved reefs are at risk. Many sunscreens contain harmful chemicals like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and Avobenzone. Some sunscreens that contain these harmful chemicals: Coppertone, LaRoche Posay, Sun Bum, Supergoop and much more. These substances are known to cause coral bleaching, degrading our reefs and the vibrant ecosystem they support. According to studies conducted by Environmental Health Perspectives and Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, even low concentrations of Oxybenzone can cause serious harm to coral reefs. Imagine the damage we could prevent by preventing these harmful substances from reaching our oceans.

We call for an outright ban on sunscreens containing Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and Avobenzone. It is a step towards a sustainable future for our oceans and the precious marine life it shelters. Together, we can safeguard our reefs and ensure they continue to thrive for generations to come. You can be part of this change. Sign this petition to show that you too care for our environment, and the others living in it.
