The Issue

The City of Winnipeg is planning to “control” (ie. eradicate) ground squirrels by utilizing Giant Destroyer between May through October.

Giant Destroyer is a pesticide used for controlling ground squirrels, an application that is causing serious concern. This pesticide introduces harmful chemicals into our ecosystem, impacting not only ground squirrels, but other wildlife as well as the soil and water. Notably, the active ingredient in Giant Destroyer is sulphur, which can contaminate soil or water resources. Studies demonstrate that prolonged exposure to sulphur in drinking water may result in various health issues like skin irritation and difficulties in breathing among humans and wildlife alike.

People and pets will be exposed to this poison as they walk through these areas and wildlife who rely on plants as their food will be ingesting this poison.

Our aim is not to eradicate ground squirrels, but rather to find a safer, more sustainable method of addressing the concern of people stepping into holes left by ground squirrels which may potentially result in injuries.

It is our responsibility to protect and maintain a balanced ecosystem without resorting to unhealthy and dangerous practices. We urge the relevant authorities to ban the use of Giant Destroyer in ground squirrel control.
