Prohibit the Use of Fireworks Until Better Control is Established
The Issue
As a local physician and an animal lover, I witness the adverse effects of fireworks on a regular basis. The ER visits surge with increased patient stress levels and bodily trauma, additionally the terror in my own pets, and the unfortunate tales of others losing their animals due to fear-induced escape during the firework/ bomb explosions are all frequent consequences of our current semi-restricted usage of fireworks.
Studies show that fireworks could have considerable health impacts, increasing noise and air pollution. In fact, according to a 2015 report from the National Pollution Control Board, residential areas had a significant increase in metallic particles in the air post-Diwali (a festival associated with extensive fireworks), posing both short-term and long-term health effects. This undoubtably has an effect on the humpback whales who come here to give birth. These loud explosions also contribute to a faster heartbeat, sleeping difficulties, a change in blood pressure, and extreme distress in people and animals. And let's not forget about the increased risk of fire hazards and injuries.
Our situation is out of control and we need to have a different approach on managing fireworks, focusing on the health and safety of our communities and our environment, including our pets. It's high time we reconsider the ill effects these displays create and impose restrictions, for the overall well-being of our society and ecosystem.
Please, sign this petition to prohibit the use of fireworks until we establish suitable control measures to prevent such issues. Show your support for a safer, healthier and more animal-friendly environment.
