The Issue

I've long been disturbed by the inhumane living conditions lobsters are subjected to in grocery stores due to the sale of live lobsters. It's often overlooked that these creatures are sentient beings who experience pain and stress.

A study in Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology states that the holding tanks in many grocery stores do not meet the necessary conditions for lobsters' survival (Stevens, 2009). Grocery stores typically do not feed the live lobsters they sell. Instead, they keep the lobsters in colder water temperatures to slow their metabolisms to maximize "shelf life." These poor conditions also decrease the quality of the lobster meat, because the lobsters are kept in captivity they atrophy and therefore they provide less meat. But most importantly, this continual stress and suffering is unacceptable and ethically questionable.

We must encourage grocery stores to prioritize humane treatment and welfare standards above profit. By banning the sale of live lobsters in our local grocery stores, we could influence a more humane treatment of these creatures. It's time to make a positive change for these sensitive creatures who've been quietly suffering in plain sight for too long.

Sign this petition to stand against the inhumane treatment of lobsters and uphold our responsibility as caring individuals.
