Prohibit the Sale and Use of Non-Silent Fireworks
The Issue
My pets cower in fear with every explosive crackle of these thunderous monsters we call fireworks, but my concern is not just for them. The detrimental impact on our local wildlife, the inhabitants of our skies, forests and waters, is something I, like many others, care deeply about.
As per a report by the RSPCA, in the UK alone, around 45 percent of dogs show signs of fear when they hear fireworks, manifesting in physically destructive and self-harming behaviours. The surreal and noisy spectacle we humans engage in for a few brief moments of joy is a source of intense terror for countless animals (Source: RSPCA).
In addition, the loud noises of fireworks have been reported to cause birds to abandon their nests and can lead to death in more extreme cases, as indicated by a study from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). This could threaten the biodiversity of our communities if we allow it to continue.
Not only that, the American College of Veterinary Medicine informs us that apart from psychological harm, fireworks can also cause detrimental physical harm such as burns and other injuries to animals who curiously approach these supposedly beautiful showers of sparks.
I am therefore urging lawmakers to pass legislation that bans the sale and use of non-silent fireworks. By doing so, we can enjoy our celebrations without causing unnecessary distress to our beloved pets and local wildlife. This is not an appeal based solely on sentimental grounds, but one grounded in scientific evidence. Please take a moment to sign this petition. Stand beside us as we advocate for the silent sky and for the voiceless creatures who inhabit our homes and our world.
