Why this petition matters

Started by Samantha Wyatt

Kratom, Mitragyna speciosa, is marketed as a supplement in gas stations and vape shops across our state. It is sold in capsule, powder, and tea forms. Unfortunately, Kratom reacts with the brain in the same way as opioids do, making it dangerous for individuals to take it without the direction of a doctor. It is addictive, and individuals must take more and more over time to gain the same effects. They become dependent on the drug and will have withdrawals when they do not have it. Kratom has negative health side effects as well, some of which can lead to death. Doctors, nurses, and mental health professionals are seeing the profound impact this drug has on individuals and families. My own family has been directly affected by Kratom, and I have witnessed how addictive, life-controlling, and unhealthy this drug is. It should not be in the hands of individuals. If there are any real benefits, it should be in the hands of healthcare professionals. It has already been banned in other countries, and some states have prohibited the sale of it. Do your own research, and please consider signing this petition to Governor Bill Lee to prohibit the sale and possession of Kratom in the state of Tennessee. You could be the change that saves lives, maybe the lives of your own family members or friends. Thank you.
