Prohibit the Import of Wild Caught Pet Birds and Endangered Species into the U.S.
The Issue
Greetings,
I am a twelve-year-old with a deep passion for exotic pets. My fascination, however, is tainted by the harsh reality that many of these animals are wild caught. The purchase of such animals not only threatens their populations in their natural habitats but also subjects them to unnecessary cruelty as they are ripped from their homes. This practice has had particularly devastating effects on bird species.
The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service reports that millions of birds are imported into the United States each year, many of which are wild caught (U.S Fish and Wildlife Service). This not only destabilizes ecosystems but also puts these birds at risk for stress, disease, and premature death due to unsuitable living conditions.
Furthermore, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), over 26,000 species worldwide are threatened with extinction. Despite this alarming statistic, endangered or critically endangered animals continue to be imported into our country.
This petition seeks an immediate ban on importing wild caught pet birds as well as any animal classified as endangered or critically endangered into the United States. By supporting this cause you will help protect vulnerable animal populations from further decline and contribute towards a more humane treatment of wildlife.
Of course, not all of these imports are bad, some may even help the animal's population, however, these imports are different in that the imprted animals have stable populations and are able to survive in captivity. Furthermore, captive bred animals make amazing pets that not only are better for the environment, but also result in a healthy happier pet, and I greatly encourage you to savor the joy that these animals can bring into your life as long as you do so sustainably, as even captive bred animals can harm the environment.
Please sign this petition today - let's take one step closer towards a better world where all creatures can thrive in their natural habitats without fear of capture or extinction.
