I am a resident of Kailua, HI, and like many others here, I have asthma. The concern for my children's future and the environment we are leaving behind for them keeps me awake at night. With wildfires becoming increasingly common, it seems reckless to add fuel to the fire with fireworks.

Fireworks are not only dangerous but also detrimental to our health and our planet. They contribute significantly to air pollution which exacerbates respiratory conditions like asthma. According to a study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), levels of fine particulate matter can increase by 42% on days when fireworks are lit.

Moreover, they pose a threat not just to those with pre-existing health conditions but also people suffering from PTSD as well as pets who get distressed due to their loud noise. The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that July 5th is one of the busiest days for animal shelters due to pets running away out of fear from firework noises.

Lastly, they harm our environment - polluting our air and water bodies with heavy metals used in their production which can have long-term impacts on local ecosystems.

For these reasons, we call upon local authorities in Hawaii to prohibit all fireworks displays across our beautiful state. This action will protect vulnerable residents like myself and my children while preserving the natural beauty that makes Hawaii so special.
