As a US Army war veteran, I've witnessed firsthand the devastating power of warfare. Not only does war destroy lives and communities, but it also carries the potential for a catastrophic threat to the wellbeing of our shared humanity: nuclear weapons. This imminent danger is why I urge policymakers, world leaders, and international agencies to impose comprehensive prohibitions on nuclear arms.

Nuclear weapons, unlike any other weaponry, possess the power to annihilate mankind and destroy our environment irreversibly. According to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), there are approximately 13,410 nuclear weapons scattered globally. Each of these holds the potential to trigger a disaster on an unimaginable scale.

A commitment to a worldwide ban on the creation, possession, and use of nuclear weapons would represent a monumental step towards ensuring the safety and security of future generations. However, standing up to this cause is not only about safeguarding future generations. It is about promoting peace and diplomatic conflict resolution, keeping in line with the very principles the United Nations was founded upon.

We have already seen the terrible cost of nuclear warfare in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is our duty to ensure history does not repeat itself. Let us strive for the deactivation and disposal of all current nuclear arsenals, as well as the adoption of international legislation to render the creation and use of such weapons illegal.
