Prohibit the Capture of Macaque Monkeys in Ganga Talao, Grand Bassin Spiritual Park

The Issue

I am a devoted follower of Mahadev and Hanuman. It is deeply distressing to witness the capture and trapping of monkeys in Grand Bassin, Mauritius, a sacred place for us Hindus. These macaque monkeys are not just animals; they symbolize Hanuman, the Monkey God, an avatar of Shiva himself. The sight of traps within this spiritual park and its 5km radius is not only heart-wrenching but also an affront to our religious sentiments.

Ganga Talao, or Grand Bassin as it's commonly known, is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site outside India. It boasts statues of deities like Hanuman and Shiva. However, the presence of monkey traps within this sacred space undermines its sanctity.

We urge authorities to render illegal the capture or trapping of these monkeys within this area. We ask for clear demarcation lines around this spiritual park and 5 km radius  to prevent any ambiguity regarding its boundaries.

This issue isn't just about animal rights; it's about respecting religious beliefs too. As Hindu Mauritians who hold these spaces dear to our hearts and faiths, we implore you to respect our sentiments by protecting these creatures that hold such symbolic significance in our religion.

If humans truly bear a conscience distinct from other animals', let us demonstrate it by protecting those who cannot protect themselves - starting with prohibiting monkey captures at Ganga Talao and its surroundings.

Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving both animal welfare and religious sanctity at Ganga Talao Spiritual Park.
