The recent tragic loss of "Gus", a beloved Blue Groper who was part of our marine ecosystem for over 40 years, has sparked an outcry in our community. Gus was wantonly killed by spear fishing, a practice that poses serious threats to marine life. In another heartbreaking incident, an entire family of Blue Groper in Jervis Bay fell victim to the same brutal method.

Spear fishing not only disrupts the balance of our oceanic ecosystem but also endangers species that are integral parts of it. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), many species targeted by spearfishing are now threatened or near-threatened due to overfishing.

Our oceans and their inhabitants deserve better protection and respect from us. It's high time we take action against practices like spear fishing that contribute significantly towards marine life destruction.
