Prohibit Single-Use Plastics in Oakland Restaurants

The Issue

Single-use plastics are a widespread cause of environmental damage and pollution. These items, often found in the form of straws, utensils, and food packaging, can take upwards of 1,000 years to decompose in the environment, according to the United Nations Environmental Program. The city of Oakland is home to countless restaurants, each of which contributes to the problem if they make use of these harmful materials. By officially banning the use of single-use plastics in restaurants, Oakland could drastically reduce its environmental footprint and set a powerful example for other cities. I’ve lived in Oakland over two years and single use plastics are littering our streets, public spaces, and schools. Whether walking or driving you see an overwhelming amount of single use plastic scattered abroad the entire city. It’s saddening and devastating to see how much single use plastic is being littered in this once beautiful city that looks like a dumpster site. Research has shown that the overwhelming use of single use plastic is not only affecting our environment and wildlife but is damaging and harmful to us. We urgently implore the city officials of Oakland to enact this ban swiftly and resolutely. This vital action step will contribute dramatically to a more sustainable future and demonstrate Oakland’s commitment to environmental consciousness. We need your voice to make a difference. Please sign this petition to help us enact this ban on single-use plastics in Oakland's restaurants. Let’s be the change we wish to see in the world by letting our voices be heard! Let’s unite together and pressure our politicians to uphold their civic duties and pledges to their communities they are to serve and protect! Thank you for taking the time to read this and sign your name!
