Prohibit Pornographic Content on Twitter to Protect Minors
The Issue
Despite allowing users as young as 13 to create an account, Twitter (now known as X) does little to prevent these minors from encountering pornographic material. With just one click on a blurred image or a simple change in the settings, any user can view and interact with explicit content. This is not only inappropriate, but also very harmful for all underage users.
Research shows that exposure to pornography at an early age can lead to several negative effects including distorted views about sex and relationships, increased risk of developing sexual behavior problems, and even addiction (Source: American Psychological Association). Yet, most minors have their first encounter with pornographic photos and videos long before the age of 18, and more than half of them encounter it by accident, for example by clicking on a link leading to an 18+ site (Source: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/research/teens-and-pornography ).
Removing it from a major social media platform used by millions of people of all ages is a step forward in preventing harm of children.
We believe that if the site allows minors to join, there should be no explicit content available at all. We propose banning all Not Safe For Work (NSFW) content containing nudity and sexual acts as well as links leading directly or indirectly towards pornographic sites (such as OnlyFans, Pornhub or various "cam-girl" sites often linked to by bot accounts that regularly interact with Safe For Work (SFW) posts and comments), or, at the very least, changing the minimum age requirement for account creation from 13 years old to 18 years old.
It's time for us to stand up against this blatant disregard for children's safety online. NSFW belongs on 18+ sites only.
We call upon you – sign this petition today and let's make Twitter a safer place for everyone.
