Prohibit Pickleball on Public Courts in Residential Areas
The Issue
In Singapore's bustling urban landscape, maintaining a level of peace and tranquility in residential areas is of utmost importance for the well-being and comfort of its residents. In recent times, the rising popularity of pickleball has become a concerning issue for many living near public courts. This fast-paced and lively sport, while enjoyable for some, is causing significant disruption to the daily lives of residents in its vicinity.
Residents of neighborhoods surrounding public pickleball courts have reported persistent noise disturbances, particularly during early morning 8am to late evening 10pm.
Unlike the muted thud of a shuttlecock in badminton, pickleball produces sharp, high-frequency bursts of noise. Acoustics experts note that a pickleball match can reach around 70 decibels at 30 metres and the noise can carry “hundreds of meters”. In the enclosed courtyards of HDB estates, the effect is amplified!
The sound of balls striking paddles, combined with players' animated conversations, shouting across the surroundings, interrupting the peace and quiet that is crucial for quality of life and mental well-being.
Evidence from sound studies shows that exposure to prolonged noise, such as that from loud recreational activities, can lead to increased stress levels, disrupted sleep patterns, and other health-related issues, particularly in densely populated areas. The World Health Organization highlights the importance of managing noise pollution to reduce negative health impacts on urban residents.
This petition seeks to open dialogue with local authorities to reassess the placement of pickleball courts and implement regulations that consider both the rights of residents to a peaceful environment and the recreational needs of the community. This balance is essential in preserving the harmony of residential areas in Singapore.
Join us in urging the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address the impact of pickleball noise on residents’ peace and ensure that community spaces are enjoyed by all without compromising anyone's well-being. Sign this petition to protect the tranquility of our neighborhoods.
