Prohibit Landlords in Alberta from Banning Pets in Rental Properties

The Issue

I am a resident of Alberta, Canada, and like many others, I find myself deeply troubled by the current situation regarding pet ownership in rental properties. Our province is filled with animal lovers who are forced to make heartbreaking decisions due to restrictive housing policies. Many landlords prohibit pets entirely or impose restrictions based on breed or size. This has led to an increase in animals being surrendered to shelters or advertised for rehoming on social media platforms like Facebook.

Our local shelters are already overburdened, struggling with limited space and resources. According to the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies' 2021 report, approximately 60,677 cats and 20,974 dogs were admitted into Canadian shelters that year alone (CFHS). The no-pet policies contribute significantly to this issue.

Pets provide companionship and teach responsibility - they are family members who bring joy into our lives. It's unjust that renters have to pay high rents yet cannot enjoy the simple pleasure of having a pet due their landlord's rules.

Ontario can’t tell you that your not allowed pets it should be like that here too

We believe it is time for change! We call upon the Alberta government to enact legislation prohibiting landlords from banning pets outright or imposing unfair restrictions based on breed or size. Let us create a more inclusive environment for pet owners across our province!

Please sign this petition if you believe every Albertan should have the right to keep their beloved pets while renting property.
